Coming to Terms With The Term Free-Range

Since we have had chickens, we have let them have reign over the entire back yard. We would moan and complain that they dig up and eat the plants, destroy the grass, and poop on absolutely every single horizontal surface in sight. Today, that all changed.

We took back control of our yarden and fenced in the girls. They still have about a 12x15 ft area to play and dig and keep a mud pit. But we now have the rest of the yard back. I was able to plant the beets and spinach in peace with Chelsea by my side. I did NOT have to chase the chickens away! It was great!

We are even starting to grow the grass back! We planted half the yarden a few weeks ago, and it is slowly starting. This cold spell is not helping though, I am sure. But, whatever. It will grow back.

I am also super excited to be able to use the yarden to actually sit outside in. With the chickens (and their poo) being contained to a certain area, we will be able to keep our outside table clean and usable.

So in order to do this, we had to lose a bed, but in all reality, that particular bed never really grew anything very well, for whatever reason. That dirt will get used to fill in the rest of the beds and more pots for herbs and stuff. For now, the chickens don't seem to be all that into digging in it...

Despite the fence looking a little hill-billy-ish, I don't care. It was cheap (enough) and relatively easy to do. And it's not so permanent that we can't get rid of it without a hug headache, but permanent enough that I know it's not gonna blow away in a wind storm. What I DO care about though, is that we will be able to walk outside and pick veggies without them being pecked over or dug all to hell by the chickens... Now all I have to worry about is that Bastard Groundhog...

Why did it take us so long to do this? That's a really good question....

Spring Cleaning

You know those moments when you wish you had taken a "before" picture, but neglected to do so because you we just bitten by the bug to do something? Yeah, I had one of those today...

I cleaned my basement today. Yes, the whole darn thing. My basement is stupid big. For real, it is the size of the ENTIRE footprint of my house, including my porch. Yes, the basement goes under the porch. What a blast when it rains (good thing the weather doesn't come from the East.) All in all, it is about 1,000 sq ft of basement, give or take. Really, it is dumb how big it is... There are actually rooms down there, real rooms, that have NOTHING in them. Except bugs and cat hair....

Honestly, we don't have that much stuff down there, truly. I mean, it is just us, so we have old boxes of files, seasonal decorations (the real majority of my junk is Christmas stuff... Did I even decorate this last year? Not really... Do I need it all? Hell yeah!) 3 or 4 coolers, and piles of junk.

So if I don't have that much crap, why am I making such a big deal about it? Well, I hauled out seven trash bags full of garbage and recycling. SEVEN. Where the heck did all that crap come from?!?! About 3 of them were full of old laundry detergent bottles and other recyclables. The other 3 were just full of nonsense, stuff that isn't worth remembering.

And that DOESN'T count the big pile of stuff I made for the yard sale. That pile would include 2 vacuum cleaners, a coffee table, various electronics, and other stuff that makes it's way into the basement because I always say "Oh! That can go in the yard sale!"

After I hauled out all the real junk, reorganized the leftover junk, I proceeded to shopvac the whole basement. It was REALLY gross down there. A LOT of cat hair. Ick.

What did I get out of all this? I got a folding table and a trash can for my laundry area... Seriously, a table that folds, on which I can fold laundry. And maybe I will put the lint and empty bottles in the trash can... Hopefully, I will actually fold the laundry... Maybe... Probably not....

Its Been a Gross Week

Ugh, I can't believe I haven't posted in nearly 2 weeks. That is ridiculous. I need to get my act together!

So anyways, I know you are just dieing to know why my week has been gross... Ok, maybe not the whole week, but the last 2 days really. Yesterday, I went out in the morning to feed the chickens and let them out like I always do. Then I brought the water holder thing in to fill it up. If you have one of those upside down chicken water things, you know what I cam talking about. Similar to putting an upside down 2 liter bottle in a holder thing for cats. Anywho, so I went back out to put the water back, flipped it upside down (er right side up?) and the top (truly the bottom) popped right off, and flooded the totally gross chicken coop. Needless to say, the coop got an unintentional deep cleaning, then I had to come in and shower because I felt like I had been flooded with chicken poop mud... ICK!

Then this morning, I was making my coffee, and I always set the cup on the refrigerator shelf to pour the milk in. I don't know why, its just what I do. So RIGHT AFTER I poured in the milk, the pizza boxes decided that that was a perfect time for an avalanche. Brand new cup of coffee all over the bottom of my fridge. Needless to say, that also got an unintentional cleaning.

Then my boss calls to tell me that one of the dogs got sick all over the mud room, so I needed to deal with that when I get to work...

Yeah... Its just been that kind of week....
