Woah, This is What a Weekend Feels Like?

I am off! For a whole weekend! Well, now, I didn't get it so easily. I came home on the red eye from Vegas this morning, and got home around 630, then slept until 10, so really, I did work. But holy cow! I am off the rest of the day, AND tomorrow! Today, it is kind of crappy and cold out, so today I think I will make chicken stock and bake some warm and cozy goodies. What will those be? I haven't decided yet....  I also will clean. With 3 kitties shedding their winter hair, I can ALWAYS do some cleaning. What do you normal people do on weekends???

What We've Been Up To

Since I found a spare part for my charger after ordering a new one, I am bringing you pictures of our fence! Yes! We finally built a fence for the back yard so we don't have to worry about the Golden Girls becoming road kill or harassing the neighbors. We will still have to worry about cats and the BASTARD GROUNDHOG (that's another post) but at least they can't run away now. And yes, we actually finished a project we started. For once.  So here we go!

Out of Energy

Really, totally, out... My computer that is... My computer charger died when the prongs got broken off in my luggage. SO here I am, at hubby's laptop wishing I could show you the pictures of our latest project! Soon my dear friends, soon. The new charger is in the mail. Signing off for now...

Seed Pics

Well, not seeds per-say, but seedlings! Before the pics, let me catch up on what I sowed this morning. I did a crap ton more lettuce (I am trying to get rid of my old seeds... We will see if they even sprout, and if not, I will toss 'em), kale, chard, peppers, a variety of herbs, and marigolds. I have never really tried to grow flowers from seed, so again, we will see if it works. If not, I will make sure I get to the dollar sale at the flower center to decorate my porch.  AND the garlic is growing! I have never done garlic before, so it is really exciting (hey, I'm into cheap thrills, ok?)   So in an effort to keep it short, here are some pics.

Just a Quickie

Get your mind out of the gutter! I meant just a quick post before I have to get ready for work. About half of the onions are up and getting TALL. Holy cow. I never started onions from seeds before, so this is really weird to me. I also got 4 varieties of early lettuce planted, and I have no idea what they are. I will make another post dedicated to lettuce later on.

Also, I got 2 kinds of broccoli planted, regular decisco or whatever the heck they are and some fun variety of purple sprouting broccoli. YUM! I think broccoli may be my favorite veg.

Also got 3 types of eggplants sowed, but no action yet. I think they are listada de gania (or gigante?), orient charm, and some other kind of long slender tender variety. I decided against the standard dark large behemoths that frequent the grocery store and market stands in favor of these smaller, lighter kinds. Over time, I have decided that the larger ones are too bitter and the skins too tough to deal with. The smaller longer ones are sweeter, more tender, AND I don't have to peel the skin off too eat them. Skin means extra vitamins and all that good stuff!

The chickens are all good and fat right now. Although with this nice weather, they have been out and about in the back yard eating bugs and worms and whatever else they can get their beaks on, so haven't been on the layer feed and scratch mix much, so hopefully they will shed some of that winter insulation. Now, if only I could say the same for myself!

Ears are Gross

Especially nasty gunky brown kitty ears. That is what I will be up against for the next 10 days as we give Oliver his 2x daily ear cleaning and ointment. The other day I posted about finding a new vet, and find I did. He is awesome. Dr. Han. Love this guy! Anyways, the other vet had been treating Oliver for ear mites and nothing was getting better. Dr. Han is now treating him for a bacterial infection, and I completely agree! Yay!

Anyways, First I have to give Oliver his cleaner, which I have to pour into his ear canal, and then let him shake it out all over me, and then I have to give him his ointment, which he is just ooohhhhh so happy about after I have flooded the bathroom with ear gunk and ear cleaner. Happy day! At least he will have nice clean and healthy ears after this, right??

Its a Sad Sad Day

No, don't worry, no one died. The kitties and chickens are good. And so is Hubby. But I am not. I just found out that the most freaking amazing job opportunity that I could ever find will not be happening. I am super bummed. That is all for today.

Oh, and I got the peas planted yesterday.

It's Here!

My 2nd favorite holiday of the year! Daylight savings time! I hope everyone remembered to Spring Forward!

I have come to a decision. Oven Lovin Saturday will be retired until next winter. With planting season coming up, then summer, then harvest and preservation season, I doubt anyone will have the time to work with their ovens. And I know, that since we don't have air conditioning, it will be too dang hot to use it. So, peace out OLS. We will see you in a colder season.

Oven Lovin Saturday

Oh My Gawd, Carolyn Renee will have my rear end for posting this so late. As a matter of fact, I KNOW she is over at Krazo Acres raggin on my at this very moment!

But all kidding aside, I really did bake this week. I finally found a wheat bread recipe that doesn't fail to rise and tastes better than cardboard. Yay for me!!! This recipe comes courtesy of f(again...)


Wheat Bread
2  1/2 c unbleached bread flour
1  1/2 c whole wheat bread flour (regular whole wheat will do just fine if you can't find the stuff)
1  1/2 Tbs sugar or honey
1  1/2 tsp salt
3 Tbs powdered milk
1 packet active dry yeast
2 Tbs butter
1  1/4 c warm water

Stir together all of the ingredients except the butter and water. (I melted the butter into the water in the microwave for ease of application) then mix in the water and butter mixture. (I do all of this in my electric stand mixer, so if you dont have one, you will have to just go by feel on this one) After everything is incorporated, and there is still flour at the bottom of the bowl, dribble in a little water, 1 tsp at a time. Knead by hand for 10-15 minutes (mixer 6-10 mins) or until the dough has become soft and supple, and not sticky.

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, roll it around to coat it, cover with plastic, and allow to rise in a warm place until doubled in size. After it rises, spread it out by hand into a rectangle, roll it into a log, and place into a greased loaf pan (I apparently did not grease mine enough... It was hell getting that bread out!) and allow to rise until the bread has risen above the pan and looks, well, loaf like.

Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes, rotating halfway through to ensure even baking. You will want to let this bread cool before slicing. I am VERY excited to have this with my eggs tomorrow!
