Seed Pics

Well, not seeds per-say, but seedlings! Before the pics, let me catch up on what I sowed this morning. I did a crap ton more lettuce (I am trying to get rid of my old seeds... We will see if they even sprout, and if not, I will toss 'em), kale, chard, peppers, a variety of herbs, and marigolds. I have never really tried to grow flowers from seed, so again, we will see if it works. If not, I will make sure I get to the dollar sale at the flower center to decorate my porch.  AND the garlic is growing! I have never done garlic before, so it is really exciting (hey, I'm into cheap thrills, ok?)   So in an effort to keep it short, here are some pics.

  1. So did you use a steel shelf and just attach one set of grow lights on the top or? Nice set up! In your garage or?

  2. Very Nice. I am trying to grow everything from seed this year and I don't think I have enough room. I really like your shelves....I may have to try and find some like them! Thanks for sharing the pictures.

  3. I start a lot of my flowers from seedlings I grow myself. I even start them in the pots they'll be in all year. I do like your light system :)

  6. nancypo- My shelf is just a wire shelf I got at Target, and I have one 4 ft light attached to the bottom of each shelf with 2 hooks and chain link.

Christy- Thanks! And about the space, I find that the shelf helps me keep everything contained. I am trying to stick to a planting schedule this year so I don't have plants coming out of my ears. We will just have to see how it goes...

wvhiker- how long does it usually take for your flowers to germinate and produce? I hope it doesn't take forever. The weather is so nice and I would LOVE to get my porch and baskets all pretty :)

Anne- Thanks for the follow, and welcome! Enjoy!

  7. I like the shelves. Are they daylight bulbs?

I never knew you got hard necked and soft necked garlic. Much of may garlic got damaged in the snow and the following freeze. I am waiting to see if they come back to life!

  8. IG - The bulbs I use are a combination of the designated "plnt and aquairum" bulbs as well as a few "warm" and "cool" colored bulbs. I don't really think it makes a difference. The plant bulbs are more expensive, so when I have to replace them, I am just going to get the different colored bulbs.

  9. They look very nice! I haven't tried growing garlic from seed but may do that this year so they'll be ready to plant in fall.

  10. A little trick for saving on over-priced "grow lights"- use 1 warm and 1 cool tube. That equates to normal light :) My hubby works in the electrical biz, and I learned that from my fave ex-felon, Martha Stewart...
